Previously, the island was called Ydrousa, which means 'wet'. Andros has plenty of water. Everywhere, springs, rivers, streams, wetlands with water birds, and even waterfalls can be found. On Andros there are as many as 200 water mills. Most of them are unfortunately in bad condition, but they do show the important role the water played on the island, through the centuries. The Sariza water source in Apoikia is said to have a healing effect. The water is bottled and exported to home and abroad.
